Starting Right

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Starting Right When I was young, I lived in a Chicago suburb. My family typically visited my grandparents in Virginia a couple of times a year and as I grew older I visited on my own. I remember during a summer break from high school taking the train from Chicago to Richmond, changing trains in Cincinnati. It was a long, long trip.   When I was staying with my grandparents I was typically bored. I didn’t really know anyone other than my cousin and his friends and there were no parks with baseball fields like there were at home. My grandfather had an entire wall with shelves filled with old books. The majority of the books were either historical or self-help books. My grandfather had lost everything in the depression and I think he read the self-help books in the hopes of making a comeback.   I remember reading books by Dale Carnegie including, How to Win Friends and Influence People and I especially remember reading books by Napoleon Hill, including Think and Grow Rich. Hill was born in poverty in the coal fields of Wise County, Virginia. He started as a news reporter and later went to law school. As a reporter, Hill was given the assignment to write stories about successful people. Andrew Carnegie was one of the people Hill interviewed. According to the legend, Carnegie believed there was a formula for success and he commissioned Hill to interview successful people and write a book about what they shared in common. The project took over 20 years. In the midst of the depression, Think and Grow Rich was published.   I think my career has been influenced by my early reading of Napoleon Hill’s book more than anything I have read since. I was convinced that there is a formula for success and I was determined to follow it. In the very first chapter, Napoleon Hill told readers they needed to have a clear major definite purpose. He said: There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it? I was inspired by his statement: When your desires are strong enough you will appear to possess superhuman powers to achieve.   So, the starting point for your life and career success is knowing definitely what you want at this point in your life and having a burning desire to achieve it. I am living proof that it works and that what you want will change over time.     I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

As a rule, first-time administrators are advanced without a guide for progress and are forgotten about to figure how to make the change from singular entertainer to mentor all alone, says Jess Loeske, chief of the board counseling at Talent Plus, an ability evaluation firm situated in Lincoln, Nebraska. Doing so can cause youthful supervisors to perish from neglect. To develop their administration aptitudes, new administrators need cautious consideration and assets. The uplifting news those endeavors are probably going to pay off for your organization. Heres how to develop your chiefs both new and prepared and help them blossom. However frequently top entertainers are pushed into supervisor jobs with no establishment, says Addam Marcotte, VP of tasks and association improvement at FMG Leading, a business the executives advisor firm headquartered in San Diego. This is regularly because of an absence of representative advancement preparing. Work with your chiefs to-be at an early stage to help make their progress smoother and simpler. An early development process guarantees you spread all the ground expected to sufficiently set them up. One of the most basic aptitudes among new directors is the capacity to consider individuals responsible and give worker criticism, Marcotte says. Its regularly trying for new chiefs to be give guidance to individuals who used to be their friends, he says. The advancing association can help encourage this change through legitimate correspondence and strengthening. Work with your directors to-be right off the bat to help make their progress smoother and simpler. Marcotte suggests tending to a portion of the basic snares new administrators regularly fall into, for example, - Overuse of new power - A hesitance to consider individuals responsible inspired by a paranoid fear of being hated - Not giving opportune criticism to reports - Believing they need to out of nowhere have all the appropriate responses There are two different ways to pick up the aptitudes required to be a fruitful new supervisor, Marcotte says. The first is by means of direct mentorship with a built up and regarded pioneer inside the association, he says. Numerous associations are using inner mentorship programs as a methods for growing high-expected ability, which can be an exceptionally savvy and compensating process. The other choice is formal administration abilities preparing. The best ones are custom fitted to the association and centeraround its extraordinary culture and values. These projects can be offered by outer counseling gatherings, or made utilizing inside assets. Numerous associations regularly favor outside counseling bunches since they can be give increasingly quick skill and dont sap the hour of inward assets, says Marcotte. Stress Training for Soft Skills Your hopeful supervisors are likely knowledgeable in the stuff to be a resilient individual benefactor in your association. In any case, genuinely powerful chiefs need abilities that go past that. What's more, this is the ideal opportunity to manufacture those abilities. At the point when an organization puts away time and cash on administration improvement for new pioneers, they set the pioneer up for progress at an opportune time in their vocation and can see more noteworthy profits for their venture all through the length of their residency with the organization, says Melanie Lundberg, partner VP of ability the executives and corporate interchanges at Combined Insurance in Glenview, Illinois. Lundberg recommends that all first-time administrators go to an initiative advancement program to guarantee they build up the accompanying: - An authority of delicate skillsthat will assist them with imparting all the more successfully - How to mentor others and impact individuals - How to organize work for themselves and their group - Learn to think deliberately Self-appraisal apparatuses, pretending, conduct rules and coaching from increasingly experienced administrators can enable new chiefs to gain proficiency with these new abilities, as long as they have a lot of space to commit errors and get strong input. Give Them Stretch Assignments Stacking up another chief with loads of new activities on the very first moment is a decent method to cause them to feel overpowered and ill-equipped, specialists state. New administrators need time to build up their muscles on new assignments and aptitudes that stretch their capacities before they take on the job all day. It very well may be a major move in the manner one needs to think and act, from considering ones own exhibition to accomplishing results through others and pondering ones individuals first, Lundberg says. Rather, increase prospective supervisors activities and obligations before they take their new situation in an authority capacityand let them know whats working in their way to deal with new undertakings. One of the most basic aptitudes will be the capacity to execute while looking after connections, Marcotte says. Great stretch objectives can help create aptitudes in driving group ventures, task assignment, worker criticism and extremely significant relational abilities. Offer future pioneers the chance to lead ventures with their companions and give mentoringand instructing to make it a triumph, Lundberg says. Give them space to fizzle and give input so they can figure out how to improve.

The Counterintuitive Scheduling Hack That Completely Changed My Life

The Counterintuitive Scheduling Hack That Completely Changed My Life A couple of years prior I had totally lost control of my schedule. In a recently made job on my business group, I was propelling another activity at my organization. Subsequently, I had more than 15 individuals legitimately planning time onto my schedule to talk with their customers. While needing to spend each conceivable moment customer confronting, I immediately ran into two problems:I required opportunity to thinkabout the activity: what was going good and bad? What were the difficulties and openings? What were the staffing transforms we expected to make to help and scale accordingly?I required chance to accomplish the work: I was answering to the companys top officials, yet was much of the time finishing significant work like my business projections and pipeline examination late around evening time and consistently in a rush. That wasnt my lone schoolwork: I expected to catch up with all the customers I was sticking into my schedule and furthermore do the subsequent work related with all the inward gatherings I was joining. Its strange, however the one booking hack that changed my life was a no planning rule. I assumed back responsibility for my schedule and held the first and an hour ago of my workday for accomplishing real work. Here are four different ways that utilizing two every day don't plan work squares changed my life:1. I could rapidly mark things off my to-do list.It was so straightforward yet by having committed work time, I could unexpectedly overcome all the seemingly insignificant details on my plan for the day that I owed to myself or to other people. For instance: indeed, that email to your customer looks incredible and here are my increases to the archive youre sending over. Or on the other hand, here are my alters to that slide deck for Fridays administration meeting. Via cutting out an ideal opportunity to overcome my own work, I turned into a shockingly better colleague to my colleagues.2. I possessed energy for profound work.I had cont inuous opportunity to finish venture work, to think basically and to just finish errands that necessary more than five or brief eruptions of consideration. That was a game-changer.3. I decreased night-time work (and got my nighttimes back in the process).Instead of getting up to speed with tasks or finishing ventures night-time, I was presently doing them during center work hours. Frequently, in light of the fact that I held time toward the start of every day, anything that surfaced at 6pm or 7pm could be taken care of first thing the following morning. By building that elegance period into my mornings at the workplace, I fundamentally diminished the quantity of night hours I spent on my laptop.4. I likewise decreased the finish of-day-scramble.As a working mother, this was enormous. I was running into an issue where, without the don't plan squares, Id be consecutive in gatherings until 15 minutes before childcare get. The decisions were either to scramble and hysterically complete something in a rush, be late to get or surrender my night to complete it. The finish of day don't plan square diminished that finish of-day-scramble, permitting me to wrap up for the day all the more successfully and lessen my stress. With the utilization of my two day by day work squares, not exclusively did my profitability soar, however I decreased my pressure essentially and my commitment at work took off. The way to claiming my timetable was grasping opportunity to not plan, a schedule hack changed my work life.

Attracting the Temporary Worker - Viewpoint - careers advice blog Viewpoint careers advice blog

Attracting the Temporary Worker - Viewpoint - careers advice blog In my last article I gave tips on how to engage temporary workers to address talent mismatches within your organisation. I highlighted specific situations where you should employ temp talent, for example when responding to the demands of new business, seasonal workload peaks and troughs as well as completing one-off projects. Now you’ve decided that you need to hire a temp, it’s time for the tricky part- going out to find them. Here’s my advice on attracting the temporary worker and how this might differ from your standard perm candidate attraction strategy. The main benefits to the candidate Think about how you can highlight the positive aspects of temporary work to potential candidates. Here is what I mention to them. Become an expert When contracting you continuously develop your expertise, increase your capabilities and ultimately become more valuable as your skills expand. You will also quickly build a large network of influential business contacts. Which project do you want to work on today? It’s up to you to decide. Find your ideal permanent role Taking on temporary contracts can help you gain experience with a variety of companies, helping you decide what you want from an employer. Many of the temporary roles we recruit for subsequently become permanent- so if you do land a temp role in your ideal organisation, you may be in luck. Flexibility Temporary contracts make it easier for you to achieve your ideal work life balance, as you have more freedom to choose where and when you work, or even take a career break. How do I sell a temporary role in my organisation to a candidate? Looking across Europe, the status of temporary work is different in each market. In countries like the UK and Netherlands, candidates are choosing temporary work as a way of life â€" valuing the greater flexibility in their work-life balance, the opportunity to gain more experience and skills and the ability to make important business contacts. However in Southern, Central and Eastern Europe, candidates still view temporary work as a stop-gap until they can find permanent employment. As such, you will want to emphasise different benefits to candidates depending on your market. If you’re in a market where the ‘white-collar’ temp is more established, you should stress how your role will provide interesting challenges for the candidate, giving them opportunities to gain certain skills and pick up more competencies. Temp roles usually offer more money than their perm equivalent due to their relative lack of security, so it makes sense to clearly highlight the (hopefully enticing) pay package as well! If you know your candidates are ultimately looking for perm roles you will need to be upfront from the start whether there will be a possibility of your role becoming permanent in the future. If the role definitely won’t become perm, how might it help them get a different role in future? What skills and experiences will they gain? Also make it clear why the job you’re advertising is temporary e.g. you have a project with a defined start and end date. In some markets candidates may be happy with taking on a three month contract that may be extended but in the case of Eastern Europe (where I do business) candidates want clear timescales and long contracts. That being said we recently had a candidate who turned down the opportunity of making a role permanent as they wanted to continue doing temporary assignments â€" so this could be the start of the market evolving! Aside from that, your job advert should look pretty much the same as for a perm role: clear job title, compelling company description and inspiring job specification. Should you treat your temp candidate any differently when in the role? The short answer is no! Not least because it would be illegal to do so under EU law. More details can be found in the relevant legislation of each country but the general framework is set by the EU Directive which can be found here. The Directive lays down the principle of non-discrimination, regarding the essential conditions of work and of employment, between temporary workers and workers who are recruited by the user company. The general legal rules are clearly to be obeyed. Still, sometimes, we need to do even more than what we the laws tell us to be more successful in finding as well as in retaining our temporary employees. For instance, you should still train temps that join your company. Although you know you may lose them at some point- this isn’t investment lost as they will become more efficient in their role and create more value for you. You won’t want to finance expensive professional qualifications but short practical training that will improve their immediate performance in their role is logical. In general make them feel as if they are part of the team and not different from the perm employees. This is the main complaint we receive from our temp candidates when they come back from assignment â€" they can sometimes feel a bit isolated from the team. This will surely have an impact on their performance as well, either consciously or not. We are social creatures after all. As mentioned before, one point of difference is that you should be open and give a clear indication to the temp whether you are looking to either extend their contract or make the role permanent in advance of the contract ending. This will give them opportunity to look for new roles when their contract ends. Please consider this advice when you’re looking to attract and hire your next temporary worker. Ticking the boxes candidates are interested in, selling the role in the right way and treating them well in that role should result in a positive outcome for both parties. On the off chance that I understood that question in a meeting, I'd think, 'This current person's attempting to get me at the most minimal cost he can get,' and I'd need to think about whether I needed to work for him, McGlynn said.Whether the inquiry is posed at all and what part it plays in the arrangement rely to a great extent upon influence - something hardly any experts have in the activity advertise at this moment, as indicated by Stephen E. Meet the Team - Colyn Mole on Aberdeens Fight Back

Meet the Team - Colyn Mole on Aberdeen's Fight Back Meet the Team - Colyn Mole on Aberdeens Fight Back 23 Nov 2016 There is no getting away from the turbulent time we’ve all experienced up here in the north east over the last few years. Working in recruitment we’ve experienced the changes that have taken place across the region first-hand. It is estimated there have been around 90,000 job losses in the region since 2014. But while there are obvious challenges remaining we are starting to see the people of our fine Granite City fighting back. Aberdeen â€" Investment Just last week Scotland’s Economic Secretary Keith Brown and Scotland Officer Minister, Lord Dunlop, formally signed the new City Deal, which guarantees £250m investment from the UK and Scottish governments. It’s expected this deal will generate around 3,300 jobs in the area over the next 10 years. A further £254m from the Scottish Government for housing and transport shows a real commitment and a belief that the region can establish itself again as a leading city for business and industry. While much of the investment, according to Keith Brown will focus on establishing  â€œAberdeen’s position as a global oil and gas hub”  developing new products and processes to reduce costs in the sector, we think it is vital other industries capitalize on this investment to build up a more robust economy around the region. Those leading the charge are also looking at creative ideas to generate alternative investment. Aberdeen Council were the first in the country to acquire investment bonds. According to cityam.com “Proceeds from the £371m index-linked bond are equivalent to over a third of the city's annual budget and nearly three times its annual expenditure on capital projects.” Other large scale projects in Scotland, for instance the £1.08 billion investment from BT which has generated an estimated 12,600 jobs across the country, will positively impact on every region of the country, including Aberdeen. Aberdeen - The Supporting Cast We firmly believe the future success of business in this region will be down to building a broader focus. At Eden Scott Aberdeen we've had to refocus our efforts into a number of different sectors that have continued to exist up here as jobs in oil and gas have reduced. Our IT recruitment business has increased as have vacancies in accounts and finance. While neither are as large as oil and gas they will continue to exist and grow as other industries grow up around them. The alternative energy sectors does depend largely on investment from the Government but there is so much engineering talent in this region that it’s essential their knowledge is redirected into this sector and that the region combines its oil and gas heritage with the future of energy provision. As a group Eden Scott operate across 20 different sectors. Our hope would be as other industries grow as a result of this investment we can support the inevitable recruitment needs. Having talked with our construction team they highlighted the crossover of engineering skills between oil and gas and construction and how valuable they will be in this growing sector. Aberdeen â€" Working Together There are other global issues on the horizon that Aberdeen will have to face up to. The potential fall-out and ongoing indecision around Brexit. Some, including the IPPR Scotland, suggest the country faces a £1.34bn budget cut by 2019/20 as a result of lower economic growth and reduced tax receipts. There is also the obvious nervousness around the global implications of a Trump presidency, especially for our oil and gas sector. However we firmly believe that the Aberdeen-shire is packed full of potential and as a business community we have to work together, through all the challenges we face to restore the area to its former glory around a more varied and robust business model.

A Recruiters Inside Scoop on Salary Negotiation Tips - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

A Recruiter's Inside Scoop on Salary Negotiation Tips Here's a little mystery you probably won't know: Bosses barely ever make their best offer first, and candidates who arrange their pay by and large win more than the individuals who don't. (Snap here to tweet this idea.) Likewise, all the time individuals who at any rate endeavor to request a more significant compensation are seen all the more decidedly, since they're exhibiting the abilities the organization needs to enlist them for. Here's a bit by bit manual for arranging your best compensation yet: Do Your Research Before you go for an interview, you should find out what the market rates are for the activity you're searching for. There are compensation overviews accessible on the web, and in case you're managing an enrollment organization, your advisor ought to have the option to exhort you on the pay run for the position you're meeting for. Likewise consider what you need from the activity, both as far as the activity itself and as far as compensation. This will assist you with showing up increasingly confident during the meeting and compensation exchange process. Try not to Talk Money Too Early You ought to never get some information about a compensation during the first meeting. While we as a whole need to gain more when we change occupations, no business needs to recruit somebody whose lone inspiration to change employments is a more significant pay. All in all, how would you answer the unavoidable inquiry question, What compensation would you say you are searching for? This is the place your schoolwork gets significant. Ideally, you'll realize the market rates for the kind of a position you're looking for. It's smarter to give a range instead of a particular number â€"you would prefer not to give a compensation that is maybe lower than the business is hoping to pay, yet you would prefer not to value yourself out of the market, either. Stress that you're principally keen on securing the correct position for you, and pay isn't your fundamental thought. Trust That You CAN Negotiate In This Economy The facts confirm that it will be simpler in certain ventures than others. As far as I can tell, pay scales in the open segment are normally fixed, and there isn't a lot of space for exchange. At the point when I make extends in my enlistment employment opportunity, I consider the competitor's present compensation, the organization's pay go for the position, showcase rates and furthermore what other colleagues are procuring. On the off chance that you've been chosen as the applicant an organization needs to recruit, and you have some profoundly looked for aptitudes and experience, you're in a magnificent situation to arrange. Try not to Be Afraid to Ask â€" But Don't Demand, Either Recognize what you're worth and don't be hesitant to request it. No one loses a proposition for employment since they request something â€"in any case, you can have a bid for employment pulled as a result of the manner in which you inquire. It's significant that your solicitation is inside the ballpark of the compensation extend, so abstain from giving a particular number until the business is prepared to make you an offer. Make sure to be excited, pleasant and proficient during arrangements. Impart to your planned boss through your manner of speaking and disposition that your objective is a success win arrangement. In case you're excessively pushy, the business may get the feeling that you're not that keen on the activity (or just intrigued by the cash) and pull back the offer. Continue Selling Yourself As you experience the meeting and arranging process, remind the business how they will profit by your abilities and experience. Suppose, for instance, that the business needs to offer $50K, however you're searching for least $57K base pay. Clarify how they'd advantage by expanding your remuneration. For instance: I understand you have a financial plan to stress over. Be that as it may, I accept that with the work area distributing and visual communication abilities I bring to the position, you won't need to employ outside sellers to create client pamphlets and different distributions. That by itself should create undeniably more than $7K in reserve funds a year. At the end of the day, legitimize each extra dollar or advantage you request. Remember to do as such by centering on the manager's needs, not yours. Make Them Jealous In case you're meeting for different occupations, you should educate bosses regarding your offer. This should accelerate the meeting procedure. On the off chance that they realize you have another offer, you'll appear to be progressively appealing to them, and it may assist you with arranging a more significant compensation. Request a Fair Price You truly need to guarantee your solicitations are sensible and in accordance with the present commercial center. A couple of days prior, I addressed a contender for an expert job who'd requested a pay of $55K â€" $60K. Since all investigators at his level (three years of experience) win between $35K â€" $40K, this competitor had estimated himself out of the procedure with his nonsensical requests. However, if the compensation offer is beneath showcase esteem, you may need to (delicately!) propose it's in the organization's wellbeing to pay the going rate: The exploration that I've done demonstrates the going rate for a position, for example, this is $6K higher than this offer. I'd truly love to work for you and I trust I can include a great deal of significant worth in this activity; in any case, I can't legitimize doing as such for not as much as market esteem. I think in the event that you reconsider the position and think about its significance to your primary concern, you'll think that its merits following through on showcase cost to get somebody who can truly have an effect rapidly. Arrange Extras and Be Creative! On the off chance that the business can't offer you the compensation you want, think about other important alternatives that probably won't cost so a lot. You can take a gander at arranging occasion days (for example in the event that new representatives must work for six to a year prior getting paid occasions, ask that this limitation be deferred.), request yearly pay surveys or arrange a sign-on or execution reward. Be Confident Make sure to utilize sure non-verbal communication and discourse designs. At the point when you make a pay demand, don't continue endlessly, expressing again and again why it's justified. Make your solicitation and offer a short, basic clarification of why that sum is suitable. At last, it's a keen arranging methodology to request a couple of advantages or advantages you don't need that seriously. At that point you can surrender and consent to take the activity without those additional advantages if the business meets the entirety of your different solicitations. In a perfect world, the two gatherings in an arrangement should leave away from the table inclination that they've won. This is particularly obvious when you're managing compensation exchanges. You need managers to have nice sentiments about the cost paid for your administrations with the goal that your working relationship starts on a positive note. What arrangement strategies have helped you in your profession? Offer your tips in the remarks! Margaret Buj is an interview and vocation speeding up coach who has some expertise in helping experts land any position they need at their best ever pay. Six Steps To Choosing the Right Grad School

Six Steps To Choosing the Right Grad School Todays post is written by  Carrie Wynne, the author of  10 Ways to be Deliriously Happy  â€"  How to Live an Inspired Life.   She conducts personal development workshops based on the principles in her book showing others how to connect to the power within themselves and develop mental strategies to create an incredible life.   As a professional sales consultant she also offers training, coaching, and sales seminars.   Connect with Carrie on  Twitter  and  LinkedIn. Visiting prospective grad schools can be fun, but its also a lot of hard work. There are critical pieces of information you need to know before you decide which universities to consider attending and the answers arent always as obvious as location, school and program reputation. I believe strongly in the vibration and energy of people and experiences. Intuition is something that lives inside of us and gives us clues as to whether we’re on the right path. Spending time really digesting your options will help you notice which one “feels” the best. Here are 6 Steps to choosing the right grad school for you: 1) List priorities. What are your values?   What’s most important to you about this grad school experience?   Once you decide what you value the most and what your commitments are, write them down.   These are your guidelines. This is your criteria for making your decisions. 2) Listen to your intuition. Try getting a feel for the school so you can get a taste of what life on campus is actually like. Can you see yourself there? Attend an open house and get a firsthand look at the different buildings and departments. Be sure and visit during a week when classes are in session.   Could you sit in on a class or two in a discipline youd consider studying? Walk the grounds or sit down on a bench and observe the students at lunch or hustling to the different buildings between classes. Would you feel comfortable in that learning environment? 3) Try Informational interviews.  Setting up an informational interview can be very helpful when determining which grad school to attend.   Set up the meeting in advance and keep it brief.   Be prepared and ready.   Write down the top 5-7 questions that will benefit you the most when making your decision.  If you’re friendly and respect their time, people will genuinely want to help you and tell you anything you want to hear. 4) Meet faculty. Many graduate students will visit their prospective campuses and meet with faculty members. A formal interview with one of the faculty members can be a big advantage because graduate-level professors have a say in admissions to their programs. If you can afford the trip, arrange for interviews at all of your first-choice schools.   For example, if you’re pursuing a masters in nursing degree, try and meet with the professors in the nursing school in advance to ensure a good connection. How do the professors and students interact with one another? How many students are in the classes? What kind of teaching style are the professors employing? 5) Find flexibility. Consider all the aspects of your grad school experience.  Picking the right college is about more than just academics. Location is an obvious factor. Youre an adult now, so everything from the courses you take to the food you eat is all up to you. You need to be sure that your university of choice has everything you need to learn and survive, from stimulating coursework to proper housing. Your search should include everything from commute time and public transit to family considerations. 6) Manage your time.  Don’t procrastinate. Plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to do the research and prepare your applications. Following these steps will help you ensure that the choice you make about which grad school to attend will be a valuable life experience. Good luck! Have you applied to grad school? What are your tips?

How to Get Mentally Fit for The New Year

How to Get Mentally Fit for The New Year With the start of a new year it is important to reflect back on the prior year, assess what went well, what didn’t and decide where you want to go next. It takes a lot of mental toughness, self-love, and discipline to create the life you want. Simply coasting along on cruise control reacting to life can lead to victim mentality and stagnation.  Dr. Sanam Hafeez PsyD,  a NYC based licensed clinical psychologist, teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College and the founder and Clinical Director of Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services shares some key ways to get mentally fit for the new year so you can move forward successfully. Clear clutter. Look at your surroundings. If you have junk drawers galore, a messy car, countertops and cabinets that are full of stuff you don’t even use, it is time to clear the clutter. According to Dr. Hafeez, “cluttered spaces reflect a cluttered mind. If you want to wipe the slate clean to allow room for new people and circumstances that serve you, you must get your mind clear. Many of my patients who describe themselves as anxious, stressed or even depressed say they feel better when they start clearing up their physical space.” Exercise a little bit.   Dr. Hafeez who also helps people overcome body image issues encourages aiming for smaller attainable wins. “People set high fitness goals for the new year and then fall off after a month or less. This leaves their self esteem shot which is when self loathing and depression can sneak in.” She advises setting a reachable daily goal of perhaps walking 10,000 steps per day. There are step-counting apps available to measure how much you walk and they add up quickly. “When you see accomplishment on a daily basis you stick with it, this sets your mind in a positive direction,” says Dr. Hafeez. Eat mind-boosting foods. Mental fitness also has to do with how well our minds work. A loss of memory or the ability to concentrate or focus can easily shift with an improved diet. “Research finds that along with other benefits, foods rich in Omega-3, such as some fish and nuts, as well as those full of antioxidants can help protect the brain from memory decline.” So eating more fish such as salmon and add fruits such as blackberries and blueberries to your diet can help. The good news is that brain boosting foods include delicious options such as chocolate, guacamole (avacados) and sunflower seeds. Color!   The adult coloring book bandwagon is a good one to jump on. According to Dr. Hafeez coloring requires total focus on the present. The repetitive motion of coloring provides relief from stress and anxiety by entering a meditative state. “Not everyone can sit still and breathe for 15 minutes per day, but they certainly can color. It’s absolutely a fun way to achieve mindfulness and shake off the day,” explains Dr. Hafeez. Apologize and forgive. A fast way to mental fitness is forgiveness! “Carrying around resentments and guilt wears us down and can lead to serious illness such as cancer or stroke. If you experienced a tough break up, divorce or perhaps the 2016 political climate led to arguments and lost friends, reach out apologize and seek forgiveness and move on. Remember, forgiveness doesn’t mean you condone a hurtful behavior. Forgiveness frees you and the other person making it easier to move forward. Learn something new.   Challenge your brain by learning a new language, how to cook, paint, do Tai Chi. Pick something you think would be interesting or useful to learn and learn it. If you avoided cooking your whole life, learning the basics will serve your brain very well. According to Dr. Hafeez, “the more we can activate the cognitive functions of our brains the better our short and long-term memory and hand eye coordination will be.” About Dr. Sanam Hafeez Dr. Sanam Hafeez PsyD is a NYC based licensed clinical psychologist, teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College and the founder and Clinical Director of Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services, P.C. a neuropsychological, developmental and educational center in Manhattan and Queens.  You can find out more about her at  http://comprehendthemind.com/about-us/ . Considerations To Make When Using A NJ Resume Writer

Considerations To Make When Using A NJ Resume WriterIf you're thinking about using a NJ resume writer to help you craft your perfect resume, you have a few options available to you. One of the advantages of working with an agency in New Jersey is that they are members of the Association of Independent Resume Writers, which means they have taken the time to build up their memberships, making it easier for other companies to work with them. In addition, a NJ resume writer can provide you with some useful advice when it comes to preparing a resume for a new job or position. For most people, the best way to use a resume writer is to use the services of one they know and trust. Working with a person who has built up a professional reputation for helping other people is always the best idea. One company I am aware of is offered by Joe Pizzo, a long-time resume writer based in New Jersey. One of the reasons that people hire a NJ resume writer is because they want to be certain they are receiv ing a professional service. If you have never heard of a company before, you will want to double check their credentials. There are several companies online, and there are many of them listed in the phone book or other sources, but you should be able to get some helpful information about them through the New Jersey State Bar Association website. The good thing about working with a company that has received accreditation is that you will be assured that they are up to par with the standards expected. This is something that you need to make sure of if you are looking for an agency to help you write your resume. Most professional agencies will have done so, so you can feel comfortable about their integrity.Another important factor to keep in mind when it comes to hiring a NJ resume writer is the length of time that he or she has been working in this field. While experience is a huge benefit, the quality of their work can vary widely. Some people are pleased with the services of a profes sional who has only been in business for a short period of time, while others enjoy the work of a long-time professional. When looking for a professional agency, it is good to know that many of them offer their services online as well. You can look at a resume on their website and then print it out for submission, or just give them the resume for their printer. Of course, having the resume on hand when it is needed is a very useful service, and this is why many companies choose to offer this service. Some people may not think it is necessary to hire a NJ resume writer, but many employers prefer them to more traditional means of preparing resumes. Any company that can provide you with a great resume is likely to also have a few more tools they can use in the way of tips. This is another reason why many people choose to work with a professional agency. While there are many different advantages to using a NJ resume writer, the most important consideration is making sure the person you hir e is a good fit for your needs. Finding a company that is experienced in this area is something that can be done, but you should also be aware of what your rights are as a client. Remember, these companies are hired by many employers, so you can be sure that they will have the ability to handle your situation properly.

6 Reflection Questions To Ask Yourself Before The New Year Hits - Kathy Caprino

6 Reflection Questions To Ask Yourself Before The New Year Hits Most of us know from experience that New Years resolutions and the huge, hairy goals we dream up for our lives are created with great gusto and high hopes, but all too frequently they die on the vine very soon after weve written them down. Today, I’m excited to share what Ive found to be a helpful year-end strategy of reflection the process of reflecting back on the past year in an in-depth, careful and probing way, exploring all that you’ve learned and experienced, created, and also “failed” at. This is a very effective step to become clearer on what you really want in your life and to commit to new habits and behaviors that will pave the way for building what you long for. This reflection process helps you connect in a powerful, juicy way with your ultimate dreams and desires, and it highlights where you’ve been living “off course” far away from what your most authentic self really wants. In my Finding Brave podcast today, I explore what Ive found to be six essential reflection questions that are perfect for this time of year, to help us take stock, grow in our appreciation, and set the wheels in motion for an amazing new year and new chapter of our lives. Heres that episode: To get moving on this process of reflection, Id suggest listening to the podcast, then taking some time before the new year or immediately after to answer as deeply and thoughtfully as you can (and write down or journal your answers to) these six questions: Reflection Question #1: Celebrating your progress What progress have I made this year toward my juiciest, most thrilling goals and visions that I want to make sure to celebrate and appreciate? As you answer this question, its important to understand a few aspects of the inner workings of celebrating your progress: Acknowledging your growth First, we humans often fail to acknowledge what weve done and achieved, for a number of key reasons. When things come very easy to us, we dont to recognize the natural talents involved in making this achievement possible. So we undervalue the accomplishment, feeling like its nothing important or valuable, or that anyone can do it. Secondly, many people (particular women) are perfectionistic overfunctioners constantly doing more than is healthy, appropriate, and necessary, and desperately try to get an A+ in all of it. This is an exhausting and disempowering way to live, as the process of trying to reach an impossibly high bar means youll never allow yourself to get there. Celebrating all the wins â€" from tiny to huge All steps towards growth are worthy of being appreciated and recognized, not just the huge things. Its so important to your self-esteem and confidence to appreciate the things that come easily to you that have made a difference in your life and the lives of others, as well as those actions that were hard and required a great stretch beyond your comfort zone. Reflection Question #2: Lessons What are the top lessons of this year, and how have they impacted how I think, speak and engage going forward? Think about the biggest learnings that have come to you from whats transpired this year â€" what you gained from the hard knocks, from the accomplishments and wins, from the challenges and heartbreak in your relationships, to the beautiful moments that took your breathe away, and more. Its important to remember that failure isnt negative in and of itself. When we fail or fall down, its not meaningless or wasted if we can learn something powerful and helpful that will support us to continue to grow. Reflection Question #3: Highest goals What are my three highest goals for next year, for myself personally and for my business? To help you explore this question fully, here are other ways to think about it: What are the outcomes that you most want to create? Where can you turn your mess into a message to help others thrive and bypass the specific challenges youve faced? Rather than agonizing about the specific hows and steps towards getting where you want to go, focus on the feeling youll have when you create, achieve, or live into something that calls to you. Just dimensionalize those feelings, thoughts and sensations of that and see with your minds eye what will be different once you become that exciting new version of yourself. Then ask your higher self to help you identify and say yes! to all the doors that will open for you as you move forward in your life towards that juicy goal. Reflection Question #4: Finding Brave In what new ways can I find brave next year that will help me grow, learn and stretch beyond my comfort zone? Take a look at where you dont feel brave today in your life, and where youve remained locked in your comfort zone when in fact, its not comfortable at all. Where can you stretch beyond that next year? What project, cause, volunteer effort, hobby, or other endeavor can you engage in that will help you feel more alive and more connected to your creative and other talents and gifts? Remember that you dont have to chuck out your current career in order to bring more meaning and purpose in your life today. Reflection Question #5: New Habits What new habits do I want to commit to, to build a healthier, happier, more balanced approach to my work and life? Ive seen in working with thousands of people that when we try to incorporate an important new behavior that stretches us, theres almost always some degree of resistance to it thats challenging. And that resistance simply wont go away unless and until you develop and commit to a new, constructive habit that supports this behavior. What habit, with some form of ongoing accountability and structure that fits your style, can you build that will help you to get where you want to go? Reflection Question #6: Closing Your Power Gaps What power gaps do I need to close, in order to be able to reach those goals Im most excited about? My current work is focused heavily on helping professionals close the 7 damaging power gaps that keep them from thriving in life and work. Heres a quick look at the 7 power gaps: Infographic created by Ivette Caballero A beneficial step for your life is to identify where you have one or more power gaps, and take just one brave, bold step to address your most oppressive gap. When you get (and stay) on the path to becoming more powerful in how you operate in the world, and use that new power and authority for good â€" for the benefit of yourself and others â€" your life with change and improve dramatically. I hope these 6 reflection questions move your forward to doing what it takes to build a thrilling New Year that matches what your hearts and soul desires. Happy New Year to you!
